POE: Technology and Design
I chose to study Integrated Media Arts because of its fluid and interdisciplinary nature. As a student you get the choice to pair it with other departments of study such as Fine Arts, Communication, Information Technology, and more, which allows you to obtain knowledge from all of those different programs and put them together in a unique combination.
I was previously enrolled in a fine arts school which had a more limited perspective. It focused on only a small aspect of design topics, which I knew wasn’t going to help me reach my goal of working in the digital illustration field. When I knew I was transferring, I began searching for a college and a program that covered more topics than just “illustration” or “design.” That’s where I fell in love with Juniata College and the Integrated Media Arts program.
Once I discovered the IMA program, I chose to individualize my Program of Emphasis to “Technology and Design” instead of the traditional IMA designated program of emphasis. I want my studies to be relevant to what I want to do in my career which is visual development illustration or video game design. Therefore, I chose to combine digital art and fine art from the IMA program, with Computer Science courses from the Information Technology Department to personalize and ultimately “individualize” my Program of Emphasis.
“All of my experiences have been possible because Juniata College and the IMA program gave me the freedom and flexibility to design my education.”
By being allowed to individualize and work within both programs, it has made my dream to become a video game designer possible. Being involved in the IMA Labs class working on branding projects for a community partner in addition to learning proper editing skills in the Video Production course has broadened my knowledge in digital design.
Taking Computer Science courses gave me the technical tools needed to go more in depth with video game technology. I will also be taking the Animation course that is being offered through the Art Department in the spring semester which will give me a taste of working with game design.
All of my experiences are made possible because Juniata College and the IMA program have given me the freedom and flexibility to design my education. I’ve thought about who I want to be, and now I can start working towards completing that goal.
